Behind the Lens: Shooting Botanica in Grenada

A finished photograph can look effortless. Just outside the frame, it rarely is.

There is a photographer checking the light, a stand being carried between locations and a team looking for the exact angle that brings the clothes and setting together.

For Botanica, the shoot moved from pink archways and flower-filled gardens to palms, sand and the water’s edge, with Kendra at the centre of it all.

Building the first frame

The pink building gave us our first visual world.

Kendra waited on the upper walkway in the cream Marguerites set while the photographer and assistant worked from the courtyard below. The portable light had to be raised towards her across the archway, with the pink walls reflecting warmth back into the white fabric.

From the finished image, none of that equipment is visible. What remains is the contrast: soft cream against blush architecture, framed by palms and blue sky.

From the garden to the shore

In the garden, the setup changed completely.

The light stand was placed directly among a carpet of small yellow flowers while Kendra wore the BLISS Short in Green and Yellow Tie-Dye. Rather than treating the flowers as a distant background, the team worked inside them. Their colour repeats the yellow running through the shorts, while the surrounding palms deepen the green.

At the beach, the setting became quieter and less controlled. The photographer worked close to the waterline while Kendra stood barefoot in the white PERLA Dress. A second setup placed her against a leaning tree, with the portable light tucked beneath the branches and the cove visible behind her.

The white cotton responded differently to every change in the sky. In direct light, its embroidery became crisp and graphic. Under softer cloud, the dress took on the calmer tone of the sand and water around it.

Working with Caribbean light

Grenada’s light does not stay still for long.

Cloud cover softened one frame and disappeared for the next. At the shoreline, reflected light came back from the sea while the breeze lifted hems and opened the longer silhouettes. In the garden, the team had to balance bright flowers, deep shade and the stronger light above the palms.

That meant watching, adjusting and sometimes waiting.

The most successful photographs came when the team stopped trying to hold everything still. Kendra turned, the breeze caught the fabric and the landscape became part of the image rather than a backdrop behind it.

What the final images leave out

They do not show the light stand being moved from the courtyard to the flower bed and then down to the sand. They do not show the photographer checking a frame, changing position and trying it again. They do not show the moments between looks, when the camera is lowered and everyone studies the next setting.

But that work shapes every photograph.

Botanica was captured through a series of small decisions: where Kendra should stand, how the fabric should fall, whether to wait for softer light or use the stronger contrast, and when to let the wind take over.

The finished campaign feels calm because of the attention happening just outside the frame.
